Juneau, Alaska Port and Glacier Viewing

While cruising to the Juneau port, our ship went through Tracy Arm Fjord to see the South Sawyer Glacier. The captain of the ship will do everything possible to get as close to the glacier as possible - but the ship is on icy waters! As you can see from our pictures, it was very cold that morning but we still got up early and headed to the top deck for viewing. Glad we had our waterproof shoes and rain jackets, also glad I packet a blanket. You can view it from your balcony, but we wanted the full experience (isn't that why you go to Alaska). Along the way we saw several pieces of the glacier - it was truly stunning. Our ship had a naturist onboard to explain everything we were seeing. How the mountains were formed, how old the trees were - things like that. We were not able to get very close, but we could still see the North Glacier.

Once we were finished with the glacier viewing, we headed to breakfast and to get ready for our day in Juneau. We rented a Jeep with a programmed GPS that mapped out several sites to see while in Juneau. Our first stop was Mendenhall Glacier Park. There were several free trails to walk around and we were able to get a good view of the glacier. The pictures can't really describe how large it really is. We then traveled to the National Shrine of St Therese. This was a beautiful area to walk around. On a clear day you might could have seen some whales or other ocean life - but it was rainy and cloudy when we were there. We still enjoyed the gardens and the chapel. (there were also bathrooms at this stop) We had a few more suggested stops on our route but decided we were hungry and headed to grab some food! We enjoyed Russian Dumplings at Pel Meni located in the "Hanger" Building. We then ate at The Hanger restaurant. I highly recommend the halibut!! We also stopped at the Alaskan Fudge Company I failed to get a picture of that, because we ate it so quickly!!!
